You’re ready to make a move to a new job. You’ve proven yourself time and time again and you are ready for the next big thing. But, how does being an introvert impact your job search? We already discuss the top introvert resume mistakes, but could you be making one of the top interview mistakes that introverts and shy people frequently make?
Top 5 Interview Mistakes That Shy and Introverted People Make
1. Not Practicing in Advance
Introverts need time to process an interview question in their head before they start answering. Therefore, you can struggle to effectively answer questions in real-time during an interview. You either give a sub-optimal answer or you sit in silence for a while you think of a response (which can be awkward!).
As such, introverts need to prepare for their interviews in advance. You should take time in advance to identify common interview questions and prepare and practice responses well in advance of the interview.
2. Not Preparing for “Small Talk”
Shy and introverted people can struggle to be comfortable with the “chit chat” associated with interviews. During the interview process, you will likely have to introduce yourself, talk about your morning commute, or weekend plans.
Introverts and shy people may not be comfortable with this type of conversation and, as such, should plan out what they will say in advance. You should also prepare questions for the interview and how you will close/end the interview.
3. Not Using Assertive Langauge
Introverts can struggle to be comfortable talking about themselves and their accomplishments. You struggle with the spotlight and, as a result, can undersell your achievements. You should take the time to write out your interview responses and ensure that you accurately reflect your contributions and outcomes.
To even better prepare, practice saying your responses to someone else…which brings me to #4…
4. Not Getting Feedback
You should practice your interview responses with someone else. Not only will get you feedback on whether on how to improve the content of your responses, but you will also get feedback on whether you are highlighting your individual contributions and using appropriately assertive language in how you discuss them.
Getting direct feedback on your interview responses will help you avoid making many interview mistakes!
5. Not Mentioning You Are Introverted
You certainly don’t need to highlight your shy or introverted nature or put it on your resume. That said, I suggest you weave it into the responses to your interview questions. For example, when discussing how you made a tough decision, you may want to say something like, “as an introvert, I tend to think and analyze before I respond. Therefore, I collected data, analyzed options, and selected the optimal choice.”
Referring to your introversion as part of how you do your work will clarify your personality and mannerisms for the interviewer, as well as illustrate the power of your introverted nature to help you succeed at work.
